This variety of Prickly Pear showcases brilliant flowers, ranging from light yellow-orange to a deep red-orange, which even slightly change color throughout their blooming period. Like all Prickly Pear cacti, this one is just as resilient & adaptable, thriving in harsh conditions and blooming through the Sonoran desert’s spring & early summer.
These plants are masters of water conservation; their pads act as natural reservoirs, while their spines serve as protection from thirsty predators. While this most precious resource is reserved, Prickly Pears provide food & nectar to many surrounding critters. In turn, they’re supported (through pollination & seed dispersal), by many different kinds of bees & birds, and are even known to be visited in the night time by long-nosed bats!
Where this particular flower essence was collected, a family of Prickly Pears plants thrive under patches of shade from two Palo Verde trees overhead, evidently a place of shelter & refuge for many animals & insects from the hot spring sun.
